Information technology and the Internet
Safety and security on the Internet
The Internet is insecure and can expose your computer and its contents to damage. WLSAR recommends that you manage the risks with some basic precautions:
- Make sure you have the latest security updates for your operating system and software
- Make sure you have the most recent virus protection updates
- Consider using a firewall
- Ensure that your system is clear of trojans and spyware. Check your PC regularly with a combination of two or three programmes (see the links below)
- Consider using non-microsoft applications for email and browsing. Examples include:-
Email - Mozilla Thunderbird, Eudora, Pegasus mail
Browsers - Firefox, Mozilla, and Opera
For more information on your internet security, try:
Linux options
For those already into Linux, read no more - this is really basic stuff for beginners. For the uninitiated, try the following and experiment with some 'easy to use' Linux packages with Windows style look and feel.
- If buying a new machine, partition your hard drive to allow the installation of two or more operating systems - Windows, and other(s) of your choice (eg Linux)
- Get an old machine and experiment with a Linux install. Check out Distrowatch.com for linux options. If you need Windows for some apps, run it from within Linux using VM ware.
- For easy to install and run packages, try Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS - download ur copies onto a CD and either run from ur CD drive or install. Up to 16,000 software apps bundled with these packages, including Browsers (Firefox and Opera), email clients, Open Office (Word processor, spreadsheet, and presentations), MySQL database, and web development tools.
