WLSAR Patient Care requirements.
First Aid is a core training requirement. All WLSAR members must hold, or have arranged to obtain,
a current First Aid Certificate, preferably in Outdoor First Aid. However, WLSAR acknowledges that
its own internal First Aid training regime cannot cope with the numbers required to reach
this standard. WLSAR has therefore adopted the following policies for First Aid training:
- WLSAR will give training priority to members without any current First Aid certification. WLSAR will then work through members who have workplace certificates if such certificates don't meet NZLSAR outdoor First Aid standards.
- In addition to WLSAR's own 2-day First Aid Course, WLSAR accepts Outdoor First Aid certificates from Mountain Safety Courses, or other NZQA certified outdoor courses. (WLSAR members often complete
outdoor First Aid courses through their own climbing/tramping/NZDA organisations).
- WLSAR members with certificates from non-WLSAR training courses must ensure that their
certification is recorded on the WLSARman database. (teams are constructed using this information)
- Workplace first aid courses are accepted only as SAR refresher courses, to keep members current
once a full SAR First Aid course has been completed. Even with regular workplace first aid training, members
should still do the SAR course every six years.
- All field teams must contain at least two members with current outdoor first aid certificates.
